History

The German Shepherd is a relatively new breed of dog, with their origin dating to 1899. As part of the Herding Group, German Shepherds are working dogs developed originally for herding sheep. Since that time, however, because of their strength, intelligence, trainability and obedience, German Shepherds around the world are often the preferred breed for many types of work, including search-and-rescue, police and military roles and even acting. The German Shepherd is the second-most popular breed of dog in the United States and fourth-most popular in the United Kingdom

Temperament

German Shepherds are highly active dogs and described in breed standards as self-assured. The breed is marked by a willingness to learn and an eagerness to have a purpose. They are curious which makes them excellent guard dogs and suitable for search missions. They can become over-protective of their family and territory, especially if not socialized correctly. They are not inclined to become immediate friends with strangers. German Shepherds are highly intelligent and obedient.

Advice

Having a German Shepherd can be a wonderful experience. They are loyal and loving companions that can offer a lifetime of joy and companionship. However, they can also be a handful and require a lot of work and dedication. Here are some tips to ensure that you and your German Shepherd have a long and happy relationship. First, make sure that you have the time and energy to commit to your German Shepherd. They require a lot of exercise, mental stimulation, and socialization. You should also be prepared to invest in proper training and obedience classes. German Shepherds need to be taught proper manners and behaviors in order to be well-behaved. Second, German Shepherds are highly territorial and protective of their families. You should be prepared to provide a safe, secure environment for your pet. This includes providing a fenced yard or dog run and supervising them when out in public. Finally, make sure that you are providing your German Shepherd with the proper nutrition, exercise, and medical care. They require a healthy diet, regular vet visits, and plenty of exercise. With the right care, your German Shepherd can be a faithful and loving companion for years to come.
